The Legendary Junkmaster

Chapter 56: Nest

Jason wore a shocked expression on his face after Dani stated what she had come for. It did not make sense for her to personally pursue the matter right now when it was a certainty that experts in this line of work would soon be headed this way. The only reason he could think of was that she let her emotions get the better of her.

"Can you help me or not? Father left me some money so I can pay for the materials." Dani's expression showed that she had some misgivings about her request. After all, she had no idea how much it would cost to make what she needed. She was only hoping that her inheritance would be enough.

'You sly bastard! You knew her well enough that you figured she would try something like this! You're only hoping that I'll be able to make something that can keep her alive! If she succeeds, that's just a bonus!' Jason cursed inwardly while he tried to maintain a friendly expression on his face.

"Don't worry about the money. What are friends for?" Jason sighed helplessly, which made Dani appear confused.

"What? No speech about how this is a bad idea? You're not going to try and talk me out of this?" Dani had come here expecting Jason to turn her down. She would have been upset by that, but she had to ask anyway. Who knew that he would actually agree instead?

"No. Even if I did try, you would just find someone else. Besides, you helped me out by risking yourself in the Zoo. I'd just be a hypocrite if I didn't help you now." Jason's tone sounded like he had just lost a significant battle, but Dani could not stop herself from smiling brightly!

She took a few quick steps forward, wrapped her arms around him, and kissed his cheek! Jason was taken by surprise. It took a lot of effort for him not to make a big scene out of it. "What was that for?"

"Just felt like it." Dani grinned again before glancing at what he was working on. "You look busy. When will we be able to talk about it?"

Jason moved his eyes away from Dani and studied his new project. "Come back tomorrow, and we can go over what ideas you have. You'll obviously need something more personal than what I keep in stock if you want to go through with this."

Dani nodded her head as she stared at Jason's serious expression. Her lips curled up ever so slightly before she landed another quick kiss on his cheek! Jason was so startled at having been caught off guard again that his ears only registered the popping noise after Dani had already disappeared!

'Damn that girl! Even now, she's still messing around! What am I going to do?' Jason sighed as he slapped his palm on his face and dragged it downwards. He would help her, but he had to prevent her from obtaining the closure that she needed. After all, he would end up in a coffin if he actually let that happen!

'When did my life get so complicated!' Jason could not help but complain to himself as he continued to crank the recharger. 'Dani wants to kill me, the town wants to kill me, the Lord wants to kill me. And Gramps… Well, Gramps wants to milk me for all the credits I'm worth!'

Either way, Jason would have to provide Dani with the best equipment that he could come up with. Her father had already technically taken care of the costs. He was just waiting for the payment now. 'Even if she does come face to face with me in my outfit, it's still a good thing to make her equipment. There won't be any secrets that it hides that I won't know.'

Knowing that information could mean the difference between life and death. As proven with his battle with Wraith. Not knowing that his outfit hid a means to produce light was what actually caused Wraith's downfall. Misinformation could be even more deadly than no information!

Wraith had assumed he had nothing to worry about because Jason's clothes did not have that mechanism the first time they met. Usually, one would not have to worry about such a rapid change in someone else's equipment. However, Jason's ability made him highly adaptable. As long as he could get enough information on his opponent.

Eventually, Jason felt confident that he had charged the first battery enough to begin on the second. However, this was the time that Trevor reappeared with his entourage of guards. When he entered the workshop without permission, Jason flashed a critical gaze towards him. After all, he was working on something new right now, and this information could be valuable in the right hands.

"Ah, sorry!" Trevor raised his hands apologetically when he realised his blunder. "It was unintentional. We'll wait outside for you to come and confirm the transfer of funds."

Trevor cursed to himself as he backed out slowly. So far, he had been confident that he had made a good impression on Jason. However, this blunder might have just ruined any goodwill that he had built up so far! Trevor could only sigh silently as he waited outside. Ten minutes had to pass before Jason showed himself with a confused expression on his face.

"What's up with the cart?" Jason asked as he observed the wooden hand-drawn cart parked outside of his store. A few of his neighbours had come out to look at it as well. Thinking that Jason had purchased a large number of materials recently.

"How else do you expect us to bring one thousand copper credits over here?" Trevor chuckled as he patted one of the bags on the back of the cart. The sound of metal being jostled around rang out, drawing the stares of everyone on the street.

"One… One thousand!" Jason exclaimed in shock and horror! He had nowhere that he could store so much cash safely! That amount was equal to ten iron credits! Which was half of the amount on his bounty tablet!
