The Legendary Junkmaster

Chapter 53: Ghost of the Past, Ghost of the Future (3)

Jason's expression looked awful as the colour drained from his face. Dr Cree moved towards her patient while holding the flask before throwing a glance towards Jason.

"How should I administer this antidote? Should he drink it, or should it be poured over the wounds directly?" Dr Cree asked in a hesitant voice.

"D-drink it." Jason stammered as he cast a lot over Wraith.

'It won't work anyway. Mr Kane needs something else.' Jason sighed internally as he was now caught in a dilemma. Wraith had been a thorn in his side, and he needed him to die. However, that would mean taking his best friend's father from her.

'But if I reveal that this won't work, they'll question how I could possibly know that.' Jason felt sick to his stomach as his eyes revealed the sadness he felt inside. 'I can't stop this. I'm sorry, Dani.'

"Please excuse me. I don't think I should be here." Jason's voice was so low that the others barely heard them.

"Wait," Wraith said through a fit of coughing. "Let me have a moment alone with Jason."

Jason felt his heart sink in his chest as he wondered if Dani's father had figured out who he was. However, he had to wait for him to drink the antidote and for the others to leave to find out what was on his mind.

"Jason. You've grown quite tall, haven't you?" Dani's father wheezed as he cast a glance over Jason. "I'll be honest with you. I don't think your antidote will work."

Jason tried to remain calm as Wraith spoke so as not to give away anything. Wraith coughed again, and a glob of black blood flew from his mouth.

"I've known you since you were a child, and now you've made something of yourself." Wraith's eyes glazed over as he recalled the past. "Promise me. That you'll look after Dani."

Jason's eyes went wide when he heard that. He had been sure that he was about to be called out on his identity! 'It turns out he's just worried for Dani.'

"Of course," Jason replied after a sigh. It was something he would have done anyway. However, now he was curious about how Dani's father became the Wraith that he knew in the first place.

"Thank you." Wraith coughed a few more times before his eyes became clear again. "Please send my family back in. I don't have much time left."

Jason hung his head as he left the room. He did not have to say anything to Dani and her mother as they rushed straight back in. 'How am I meant to keep this from her?'

Jason sighed as he slumped into a chair next to his Gramps. He leaned forward and held his head between his hands as he considered the mess he was now in. 'It's not my fault! If that gang hadn't tried to take my hard work from me, this would never have happened!'

"It's not entirely their fault," Syssie whispered as she reactivated her avatar. "It's just as much his fault for getting involved with them in the first place. His own choices led to this."

'That won't matter to Dani… If she ever finds out the truth…' Jason could not bring himself to finish that sentence.

However, before he could get lost in his thoughts, the clinic door opened again. Trevor, the guard captain who had stopped Jason a few days ago, appeared as he crossed the threshold. Three other men followed closely behind him, and they all wore severe expressions on their faces.

Trevor raised an eyebrow as he glanced at Jason and Harry. "Which room is Gordon Kane in?"

Jason stared at Trevor with a blank expression. Eventually, Harry answered the question for him by pointing towards the room with Dani's family inside.

"Thank you." Trevor led the squad directly into the room without asking for permission.

'Why are the guards here? Wouldn't the Red Steel Gang want to keep this quiet?' Jason did not know why but he felt a sinking feeling in his gut. As if there was something off about the whole situation.

After a short while had passed, one of the guards quickly left the clinic in a hurry. 'Something's definitely going on!'

Jason began to grow tense as his mind was thrown into disarray. No matter how he thought about it, he could only imagine that things were about to get hard for him.

Another hour had to pass before the guard returned. Two figures followed closely behind him. One was a tall old man with long white hair and a beard that reached his chest. The man gave off an imposing aura that made Jason feel breathless. However, the figure behind him gave Jason a surprise.

It was none other than Sam! Her head was hung low, and she looked devastated. She moved quite awkwardly, which gave Jason the impression that she was suffering from hidden injuries.

"If Gordon doesn't make it through this, you should be prepared for your punishment!" The old man stated with ill-concealed fury as he stared at Sam. "Take me to him! Samantha! You stay here!"

Sam visibly shivered under the man's gaze before shuffling towards an empty seat. As she sat down, she began to toy with her red hair nervously. She was so caught up in her own thoughts that she failed to realise that Jason and Harry were sitting not far away from her.

Not long after the guard led the old man into the room, a heartbreaking scream rang throughout the clinic. Which was soon followed by a second. Jason felt as if his whole body had just frozen. There was only one reason that someone would make a sound like that!

Furious yelling rang out from the room, and Jason recognised it as belonging to the older gentleman that Sam had accompanied. Bright flashes could be seen coming from the doorway as if someone had activated their power.

When the flashes stopped and the only sound left was that of two women wailing, Sam appeared to panic. She seemed to go into an absolute panic as the old man appeared in the doorway and fixed her with a terrifying gaze.

"He's dead…"
