Shepherding Humanity

Chapter 83: Returning as a youth

Grantham was also anxious.

It was theoretically possible that he could take in the Phoenix’s blood, clean his genes, and be reborn from the ashes, but whether he could actually do it has yet to be seen.

He knew well that he was stepping into a brand new territory. This has never been done before in the Magic World, and if he succeeded, he’d usher in a new era.

"Teacher…."

Ermin who was standing by his side looked worried.

She was not stupid, and has noticed that something was odd.

How could the pet of the Emperor of Alchemy—a mere Slime—be so formidable?

He had made the Emperor of Alchemy’s signature alchemical armor.

He seemed to know everything, and had created countless miracles to help her escape.

Even now, he was creating a never-seen-before potion so that he could live a second life.

Although she didn't want to admit it, based on how doggedly their enemies had pursued them, along with various other signs, she has noticed an unbelievable truth: The legendary Emperor of Alchemy was actually a Slime.

That is to say, when she had thoughtlessly saved a little Slime collapsed by the roadside all those years ago, she had accidentally saved the entire Magic World…

But after all this time, that was no longer important!

Ermin looked at the potion on the table and walked out silently, "You are the Great Emperor! You must live! You can't die so easily… I don't want justice to be defeated. Evil must not be allowed to run rampant in this world!"

"I have only admired one person ever since I was little."

She leaned against the wall, took a deep breath, and silently looked up at the blue sky over the mountain range. "Back then, when you kept asking me about the person I admire, I only answered you with a smile. I couldn't say that I grew up listening to your legend because everyone would be shy when facing their idol."

"Ending the era of the dark witches! Opening up a golden age of alchemy! Creating the two alchemical Wonders of the World! Leading the people of Babylon up to heaven to have an audience with the gods! Devotedly guarding the seven witches you love, and toiling away to create life-extending potions for their sake… Your accomplishments are too many to count!"

In a secret room.

Grantham was also taking a deep breath: "Hesitation is weakness."

He gulped down the Potion of Genetic Expansion, and an insidious burning sensation enveloped his entire body.

Pain!

Severe pain!

This pain was more severe than the deadly ritual of "The Blood of the Evil Eye" which turned people into mages. He felt as if he was constantly being burned into ashes and then made anew.

As his consciousness faded, Grantham thought he could see a Phoenix rising from the blazing flames.

"Am I going to die? After begging for sympathy and acting cute for so long, I’m still going to fail?"

He smiled helplessly. "You can really feel so much pain that you want to die in this game. It hurts so much! It's still hard core as always, but it’s also this kind of pain that makes me feel that I’m really living a second life!"

He couldn't hold on anymore, and his consciousness completely plunged into darkness.

After blacking out for most of the day, he woke up in a daze and felt sore all over.

"This is…"

Grantham made a fist. He had changed on a fundamental level and his entire body felt light as a feather.

There was no data and no game screen to remind him, but he could clearly feel that his body had undergone a metamorphosis, and he has transformed into a brand new species. This was a clear physical sensation.

This was a real world after all.

"Teacher, you’ve finally woken up." Ermin furtively wiped away her tears and quickly stood up.

"I’ve succeeded."

He looked at Ermin, who was crying with joy next to him, and felt immense relief. At this moment, he has completely stopped treating this as a game. There were flesh and blood people inside, with real emotions, real pain, real laughter and tears. This was his second life.

Next, he started to consider his second new gene. At the moment, he only had a single choice:

The Pallbearer Chicken’s gene.

That’s right.

He was a Slime, so he naturally couldn't pick the Slime gene, and the Evil Eye's gene had already been integrated. There was no other choice.

"I have only one choice? I have to take in the gene of that crazy guy in the sandbox. Such misfortune…" Grantham was speechless, but still logged out to post on the forum.

Ermin was very calm as she looked at the Slime who had suddenly fainted and "logged out".

She was used to it by now. He would frequently faint for a few days, hours, or even ten minutes at a time. This was probably the after-effects of the Emperor of Alchemy getting seriously injured in his feeble old age.

Future Skywhale: "Everyone, I’ve succeeded! It’s time for me to take the next step, and take in the Pallbearer Chicken’s gene after opening up space in my gene chain!"

"Finally…"

"Finally…"

As soon as he posted, everyone sighed in relief.

They had been far too anxious for the past few minutes.

They felt as if they had sent a dying patient to the hospital after a long and difficult struggle, only to find that it was self-serve only. They had to prepare the operation fee, the surgical scalpel, and all kinds of medications. After overcoming countless hardships and dangers, they finally got him into the emergency operating room, but could only anxiously wait outside.

They were so afraid that the operation would fail, and all their previous efforts would be in vain.

Hands Off: "Success! I finally have the peace of mind to go to the toilet now. I feel so relieved."

I love learning: "I feel as if a great weight has been taken off my chest. We have created history in the Magic World and will live on in historical records! And I’m also happy to know that you’re fine. Do you want to integrate the gene of the Pallbearer Chicken now? And turn yourself into a delicacy? Besides, don’t you think the name “Pallbearer Chicken” sounds very unlucky? (?)"

Akina’s Speedster: "?! I'm very angry! My gourmet species is the strongest, okay? Since the Creator likes their taste so much, other gods will probably like it too. The next time the bossman seeks an audience with the gods in heaven, he could use his own flesh and blood as an offering to please the gods! (?)"

Cerebral Bluff: "You’re nuts bro! How'd you even think of such a move? You’ve failed in poisoning the Creator, so now you’ve switched targets, and want to kill the heavenly gods of the Magic World with your poison? What a pro! (?)"

Cute Girl who wants to evolve into a Dragon: "Wow! So scary! He’s going to sacrifice himself to kill the heavenly gods. He’ll hide shit in their lunchbox, and poison in the shit? (?) "

….

The thread was filled with good humour.

Grantham also laughed while wiping away cold sweat. While these guys were full of crap most of the time, in fact, they were very good people.

As for poisoning the heavenly gods, he had no such plans.

They were only joking, and even if he managed to get through the eye of the storm, this toxin only worked on Level Four Mages and would be useless.

Grantham thought for a while and posted: "I am going to integrate the new gene now and livestream my comeback."

Next, Grantham took the "Poisonous Harpy" gene-changing medicine.

After expanding his genes, taking in a second new gene was relatively safe and he didn’t have to worry about his life. After the severe pain has passed, Grantham looked at his new form and was rendered speechless. He has turned into a dark green poisonous slime with two little wings behind his back. "I have turned into an angel-type Slime? I've gotten even cuter, what's wrong with this world?"

He posted some screenshots and caused a great stir on the outside.

"Wow, the boss is so cute! What an Adorable Slime King! Look at those little wings! Our little Emperor of Alchemy can't be this cute!"

"Hahaha! ? ?! The difficult period is over, and it’s time for some entertainment! The boss has extended his lifespan and regained his youth. Now, we must follow the livestream of his counterattack!"

"As expected of a fan of sim games, the boss is quite the collector, and his vault has enough material to build a new Grantham. My couch is ready! I’ve also prepared snacks, tea, and soda! I’m just waiting for him to start livestreaming his comeback now!"

……

The Kingdom of Babylon, year 539.

The emperor Grantham, who reigned over Alchemy and the Gates of Truth, was assassinated in the royal palace twelve years ago, throwing the world into turmoil.

This chaos has lasted for over twelve years.

Many things have happened during that time. The Rose Saviors seized the giant "Adolphus" and headed to the Island of Alchemy, Gorgon, to unseal the Empress of Death. But, they were stopped by the Beastmen Kingdom in Wolfe Harbor.

The Beastmen Kingdom had just dealt with one emperor, and had no intention of letting another one appear to rule over the world.

The struggle between the two great factions has become increasingly fierce.

After several years of this…

"The Emperor of Alchemy should have died of old age. He was already close to the 250 years limit and also got grievously injured. We no longer have to worry…"

Although they still pursued the Emperor of Alchemy, it was no longer a priority and they had turned their attention to warring against one another.

After all, everyone must die of old age. This was an immutable fact.

The Three Witches who founded an era. The King of Heroes Gilgamesh. None of them could escape death. Even the illustrious Emperor of Alchemy must be a pile of bones by now. He couldn't have surpassed the Three Witches and Gilgamesh, right?

During these turbulent twelve years, some of the smaller magic schools have been annihilated, and many others have risen.

The leading witches of the Kingdom of Babylon barely managed to keep their kingdom afloat thanks to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

But on this day, a perfectly beautiful three-meters-tall man walked through the gates of Babylon. Behind him was a similarly tall woman who was also three meters in height.

The guards on both sides of the city gate, and the poor people passing by couldn't help but stare in shock.

"This size! It's a three-meters-tall giant! Only the legendary Emperor of Alchemy has such stature…"

"You’re not wrong, that is the Emperor of Alchemy’s face when he was young. Our ruler, the Emperor of Alchemy has returned!"

"The emperor has returned! He is still so youthful! He has gained a second life, and returned as a youth!"

Everyone excitedly talked, and the elders among them were even weeping.

Grantham walked through the streets and arrived at Babylon’s palace gates. He glanced at the chattering people around him and softly spoke: "I will stand here and wait for three days. Within these three days, all the rebels must come before me and beg for my mercy!"

The returned Emperor of Alchemy had peerless confidence!

Countless Babylonians wept with joy. They poured out into the streets to welcome back their Lord.

Grantham quickly posted and logged back in without lingering outside. He silently waited for the enemy to come knocking on his door.

On this day, the entire Magic World was in an uproar.

People thought that their Epic Emperor, who was nearing the end of his life, couldn't escape old age, sickness, and death, but he had broken these rules and returned as the king once again.
